Trekking in PNG combines challenging physical terrain with deep historical significance. Many of the trails, like Kokoda and Shaggy Ridge, are steeped in World War II history, offering trekkers a chance to walk in the footsteps of soldiers while experiencing the raw beauty of PNG’s wilderness.
PNG treks are generally considered tough due to the combination of steep climbs, humid conditions, and remote locations. Trekkers should be prepared for long days of hiking through dense jungle or over rugged mountains. A good level of fitness is essential.
We provide experienced local guides who are knowledgeable about both the terrain and the historical context of each trail. On many treks, such as Kokoda, we also use local porters to assist with carrying gear, allowing you to focus on enjoying the trek.
Packing light but smart is key for trekking in PNG. Essential items include sturdy hiking boots, lightweight clothing suitable for humid conditions, insect repellent, a good-quality rain jacket, and plenty of water purification tablets. We will provide a detailed packing list before your trip.
Safety is our top priority. We carry satellite phones on all treks for emergency situations and work closely with local communities to ensure safe passage through remote areas. Our guides are trained in first aid and have extensive knowledge of the region.
The best time to trek in PNG is during the dry season from May to October when conditions are more favorable for hiking. The trails can be very muddy and difficult during the wet season from November to April.
