Wild Trek Tours’ Keppel’s Hut camping and hiking tour lets you explore the outer reaches of Lake Mountain with its widespread network of well-maintained trails. The Lake Mountain Summit Trail leads to the 1433m summit and offers an excellent panoramic view of your surroundings.
This is an overnight walk from Lake Mountain (near Marysville in Victoria) to Keppel’s Hut, returning the next day. The Keppel’s Hut track is a medium graded walk that can be done with medium fitness by the whole family. The trek is around 15km return.
The Keppel brothers built a number of huts in the area from around 1885. This particular hut was built in 1985 and is in good condition. It is a great representation of the typical type of hut mountain cattlemen lived in, making this sight a must-see for anyone interested in Australian history.
There is ample room for tents, and if the hut is empty, there are bunks for 4 people. The hut has a fireplace and some chairs inside to use to keep warm for whenever it rains or snows on a cold day. Firewood is stored at the back of the hut underneath a small shelter. There is also a drop toilet, and water is available from a creek nearby. We normally walk the Keppel’s Hut track in the warmer months – December to April.
